A couple weeks ago, Nicky from Nicky’s Cafe. Nicky told us his life story of how he came from Greece and how he arrived in Nova Scotia at a very young age of 15. He mentioned how getting off at pier 21 was one of the most important moments in his life. On his journey to Regina, Sask he only had $10 to his name. He started off as a dish washer at a restaurant, and than with his brother they opened up a formal restaurant called the diplomat in 1980. After a few years there, Nicky left to open up his own restaurant which is Nicky’s Cafe, which has been doing excellent business since 1984. Check out Nicky’s cafe sometime! It’s over off Broad Street!
Morning Breakfast Service
Posted in Entrepreneurship, Meaning with tags Breakfast is important class project ???? profit on 2010/10/13 by brettd1993So, in Entre class we are currently working on starting a breakfast club at my local school (Campbell Collegiate) where we will be serving breakfast to go for students who arrive with an empty stomach. There will also be drinks such as apple juice, Orange Juice, and possibly coffee. I’m also pretty certain we will be having specials once a week such as a pancake breakfast. At this moment we are choosing our President and Vice President’s. I’m running for the VP of Productions/ Operations.
So why should we eat breakfast? It’s been shown that kids that eat breakfast do well in school, and socialize more than kids who seldomly eat. Cereal is one of the most common breakfast cereals and was invented by James Caleb Jackson; a vegetarian in 1863.
Breakfast is one of the important meals of the day, without some kind of meal in the morning it has been said that students will fall behind. Many people think that skipping breakfast will help lose weight when actually eating breakfast helps lose weight. A healthy morning meal should be 20 – 25 percent of your days total caloric intake.
Any suggestions on a company name? I was hoping for “The Breakfast Club”.
A Great Entrepreneur: Ray Kroc
Posted in Entrepreneurship with tags Fast Food, Mcdonald's, Popular Venture, Ray Kroc, Restaurant on 2010/09/26 by brettd1993Ray Kroc grew up in Oak Park, Illinois he was born on October 5, 1902 (woot, birthday coming up). When he was a small boy his father took him to a phrenologist who claimed he would find his future in food services. Well as it turned out Ray would later become partners with the Mcdonald brothers after selling them 8 multimixers he was interested in the business they had started. The Brothers awarded him the rights to open more businesses and start a franchise and that is just what he did.
Sadly, Ray was barely making any profit. Financier Harry Sonnenborne came in and convinced Ray that real estate would be the franchise’s financial success. The company started buying and leasing out land at a decent profit, unfortunately the Mcdonald brothers did not approve of Kroc’s decisions so they sold their stake in the company to him for 2.7 Million dollars. Mcdonald’s solves the need for food in a quick timely manner, and helps prevent hunger for low prices. The Venture became really popular and still is known today for the fast food and quick service.
I think the company was very successful because Ray Kroc knew how to reach out to the public and he did just that by expanding a small fast food restaurant. Personally, I’m a vegetarian so I can’t really say much about the food. I’m sure it had much better quality in the 50′s, but many fast food places now are known for providing people with health problems and becoming over weight. However, Mcdonald’s has been very good at making profit and like this photo says “Over 1 billion served”.

Gregory & The Hawk – Isabelle
Posted in Acoustic, Folk, Guitar, Meaning, Music with tags Gregory & The Hawk Isabelle on 2010/09/20 by brettd1993Now it’s just you two
in a world of poems and paintings
I guess this means I’m through
it also means I’m breaking
but Isabelle what can I do
if I’m caught in him, this man you love?
and Isabelle what can I do
if his strong hands make it hard to shove him away?
and I know it’s hard
to picture it up here
in your tobacco strewn back yard
and it is kinda tiresome to keep an eye on him
just look what he’s done so far
but Isabelle what can I do?
the last thing I need is to end up askew
and Isabelle what can I do?
the prophets make it difficult
Isabell what can I do
in the few weeks time you’re out of sight?
and Isabelle what can I do
just because it feels alright?
and the grounds already hard
where its been dug in
I’ve gone this way too many times
but the pit keeps going deeper
and I’m not turning back
so Isabelle try to understand
I know just what to say
but it’s incorrect to say it
how do I break it to him?
the death of one is staying
and all I think of now
is a way to get under and a way to get out
Isabelle what can I do
with the knife pain it’s causing you?
I just learned how to play this song on Guitar
Michael Pritchard makes filthy water drinkable (Very Interesting!!)
Posted in Entrepreneurship with tags Michael Pritchard Ted Talks Daily Podcasts Entrepreneurship 30 on 2010/09/17 by brettd1993So basically, Michael Pritchard invents a bottle called the “Life Saver” that makes contaminated water drinkable. This video is very cool to see, he got the idea from the disasters in the world in 2004/2005. The Tsunami in Thailand and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. If most holes in filters are 200 nanometers and the smallest bacteria is 25 nanometers he figured the holes should be 15 nm and that’s just what he did.
An interesting fact is how he took the most disgusting water even with rabbit droppings in it and was able to filter it in seconds. He even gave some to one of the programmers in the background. A good point he had was how this could save lives during a disaster and prevent more problems occurring and help families build on.
I found this video very neat and inspirational, owning one of these Life Saver bottles would be an excellent thing to keep in a first aid kit. I also agreed with how much money it could save the government from having to ship out water. I would like to ask Michael how much the bottles cost? and how much are the filters? Where might I find these products? Who will supply these bottles?
